Padel Court Surfaces – Mondo Comparison and Selection Guide

The surface of a padel court is a critical element that directly affects the quality of play, player safety, and long-term maintenance costs. Choosing the right surface is not a simple decision – the market offers numerous options with varying characteristics. In this guide, we analyse padel court surface types, with a particular focus on Mondo SHOT XN, the standard turf on MejorSet courts.

Types of Padel Court Surfaces

Padel courts use several types of artificial turf that differ in fibre density, pile height, material composition, and sand infill volume. The main categories are monofilament artificial turf, whose fibre recovers after every step and keeps its bounce, and fibrillated artificial turf, which is more economical but flattens faster and loses its bounce. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses affecting gameplay performance, safety, and cost.

Mondo SHOT XN — The Standard Turf on MejorSet Courts

Mondo SHOT XN is the standard turf on MejorSet courts, including the FIP Official Court and the Panoramic RC-10. The FIP Official Court comes with SHOT XN Blue; on the other models with SHOT XN, blue or green is chosen in the configuration. According to the manufacturer, it is a 10 mm textured monofilament of the same type used on the centre courts of major professional tournaments. The official turf of FIP and Premier Padel is Mondo SuperCourt X3, which comes as standard on the Premier Padel Official Court.

Mondo’s monofilament fibre recovers after every step, and its textured structure holds the sand between the filaments and keeps it from rising to the surface. The result is an even bounce and consistent grip year after year; the two-layer polypropylene backing with polyurethane coating keeps the turf dimensionally stable through temperature changes. Mondo produces all its turf systems in its own factory in Borja (Spain), from fibre extrusion to finishing.

How the Surface Affects Gameplay

The surface plays a decisive role in padel game dynamics. A high-quality surface enables predictable ball bounce, which is the foundation for developing technique and strategy. The friction between footwear and surface influences sliding, changes of direction and player safety; Mondo’s textured turf offers improved rotational and longitudinal traction and better grip.

Maintaining Your Padel Surface

Proper maintenance extends the lifespan of the surface and ensures quality play. Routine maintenance includes brushing the surface to distribute the sand evenly, removing leaves and debris, checking sand levels and topping up as needed, and inspecting edges and seams; brushing frequency depends on usage and the manufacturer’s instructions. Mondo’s textured fibre holds the sand between the filaments and keeps it from rising to the surface, so the turf needs less brushing and maintenance.

Comparison with Competitors

When selecting a surface, compare several factors: how well the bounce holds up over the years (Mondo’s monofilament recovers after every step, while cheaper fibrillated turf flattens faster and loses its bounce), certifications (GREENGUARD, REACH; Mondo is a full member of ESTC, and Mondo SuperCourt X3 is the official turf of FIP and Premier Padel), and total cost of ownership including maintenance and replacement.
